About OSTN
OSTN is the first and only 24/7 global television network devoted to student-produced programming. OSTN's mission is to provide opportunities for students through resources, community, exposure, and experience.
OSTN History
CampusEAI Consortium member colleges and universities in the United States expressed a need to share high-quality video programming being developed by students in student television, broadcast journalism, and film deparments in order to provide greater and to fill gaps in their local student television station schedule. In 2004, the CampusEAI Consortium provided funding and helped establish the Open Student Television Network. (OSTN). Over 100 student television stations, broadcast journalism, and film departments contributed high-quality video programming to OSTN. In Feburary of 2005, OSTN was launched as a television channel on on Internet2, the national advanced reserach and education network in the United States. Based on the volume of programming and the interest expressed in OSTN from around the world, OSTN expanded its channel portfolio and distribution.
OSTN Channels
OSTN is composed of the following channels:
OSTN Channel :: is the first and only 24/7 channel devoted to student-produced programming. OSTN features a wide variety of programming from colleges and universities all over the world. We air programming from various genres including sitcoms, dramas, documentaries, films, animation, news, and many others.
OSTN News :: is the first and only 24/7 global television channel featuring the latest student-produced news segments from around the world.
OSTN Films :: is the first 24/7 global television featuring full length films, shorts, animations, documentaries, as well as film review shows from individual students, universities, film schools and film festivals.
OSTN UK :: is the first and only 24/7 channel devoted to student-produced programming from the United Kingdom (UK). OSTN features a wide variety of programming from UK colleges and universities all over the world. We air programming from various genres including sitcoms, dramas, documentaries, films, animation, news, and many others.
OSTN Distribution
OSTN now is delivered to nearly 60 million potential viewers at more than 4,500 university member campuses in 46 countries around the globe. OSTN can be viewed at colleges and universities around the world on both computers (PC, Mac, Linux) and through a campus cable system. OSTN also distributes is programming through the Associated Press, Joost, and others coming soon.
OSTN NBS MediaFest
As the only annual conference focused exclusively on student television, this event brings together all the student television stations and broadcast journalism and film majors from across the United States:
- To help student television station staff effectively communicate as a community and overcome common problems
- To enable existing student television station staff to offer advice and to aid and assist new stations in setting themselves up
- To showcase the great and the good of student television through a gala awards ceremony
- To work towards raising the profile of student television within the wider world of the television industry
- To provide hands on training in broadcast television technology
- To prepare college students for careers in television, broadcast journalism, and film
