OSTN AND INTERNET2 PRESENT INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL
Groundbreaking Film Festival Uses Internet2 Network to Exhibit Original Student Film and Video to Cleveland, Internet Audiences
| Cleveland – August 06, 2007 – The Open Student Television Network (OSTN) and Internet2 held their first joint film festival over three nights of screenings on July 19, 20, and 21. The OSTN-Internet2 Film Festival showcased student work submitted to OSTN from 2004-2007 and was held at Cleveland State University’s Monte Ahuja Hall as part of Ingenuity Fest. The film festival’s first-year screenings featured programs from around the world and produced locally in Northeast Ohio. After each screening, Internet2’s high performance national, regional, and campus networks provided an interactive videoconference linking directors and instructors with audience attending the film festival for live Q&A sessions. | | “The first annual The OSTN-Internet2 Film Festival proved to be a successful and truly educational venue for student filmmakers to share their work and experiences in a rich and interactive environment,” said Ann Doyle, program manager for Internet2’s Arts and Humanities Initiative. “We look forward to working with OSTN on future events where we can leverage next-generation technologies to provide students access and exposure to new opportunities that might not otherwise be available to them.” The event included a Premiere VIP Reception on Thursday, July 19, attended by executives from OSTN, CampusEAI, and Internet2, as well as members of Cleveland’s arts, technology, and business communities. Thursday’s reception was followed by an evening of the best short films submitted to OSTN from around the world. After the screening, the videoconference linked instructors from Duke University’s Film/Video/Digital Program (FVD) with audience at Monte Ahuja Hall for a Q&A discussion. |  | Nina Sarnelle (right), director of CATARACT, and Anjli Jain, Executive Director, CampusEAI Consortium | | Nina Sarnelle, the director of CATARACT, answered questions about her experimental film from Monte Ahuja Hall and was joined via videoconference by Production Coordinator Josh Gibson and Animation Instructor Fred Burns from Duke’ FVD, the program that produced the animated short Attack of the Cephalopods. Friday evening’s documentary film showcase featured three films: Trauma, Voices of the Past, Faces of the Present, and “Understanding Relapse,” from HBO’s Addiction. The screening was followed by a Q&A discussion featuring the director of Trauma Robert Duns and Michelle Reali and Linda Carper from the Huron Hospital | | | Youth Diversion Program, where Trauma is shown to at-risk youth. Genna Duberstein, director of Voices of the Past, Faces of the Present, joined the Q&A via videoconference, answering questions about her experience documenting the stories of Japanese internment camp survivors. | | The film festival’s Saturday screening featured a selection of student television programs and a Q&A videoconference with Bryan Fischer and Jake Beal, General Manager and Assistant General Manager of the University of Southern California’s TV station, Trojan Vision The screenings also featured student-produced work from institutions such as Brown University, the Asian Young Filmmakers Forum and the International Film School of Paris as well as work from Cleveland-area schools such as Oberlin College, John Carroll University and the University of Akron.
